JBF Awards x Cocktails

Today the James Beard Foundation announced its short list of nominees for their culinary awards in May.  Among those who made the cut are some awesome cocktail folks.  We reckon you don’t need to wait for to see who wins to know all of them are pretty awesome.  So we recommend picking up copies of these two great books, and then heading over to the two great bars for a good read and a cocktail.  Cheers!

the Books:

The Drunken Botanist: The Plants That Create the World’s Great Drinks
by Amy Stewart
An awesome look into the botany & history of alcohol.  A fun read for cocktail nerds & n00bs alike. (buy a signed copy)

The Cocktail Lab: Unraveling the Mysteries of Flavor and Aroma in Drink, with Recipes
by Tony Conigliaro
Phenomenal cocktail recipes and stunning photography, plus nifty graphics that visualize the taste of certain drinks.  Learn more about the science of cocktails & Tony Conigliaro on our blog.  (buy the book on Amazon)

(nominated for best Beverage Book)

the Bars:

The Bar at the NoMad Hotel, NYC

One of our go-to date spots, or drinks-with-friends spots, or drinking alone spots.  Drinking all the time, really.  Pro tip: make sure you get the fried chicken to pair with your cocktail. Read our full review.

Maison Premiere, Brooklyn, NY

You can’t beat this bar for Cocktails & Oysters, or for their absinthe selection.  They also serve a full food menu, so it’s a great spot to go and park yourself for a day or an evening … or both.  Read our full review.
