Manhattan Cocktail Classic in Review
It was a whirlwind few days, and I had a great time tripping the light fantastic with our fabulous team of writers. We’ve got lots of coverage on individual events – with more coming! – but here’s an overview of the weekend’s events to give you a feel for “a day in the life” at the Classic.
Thursday, May 16th: The pre-Gala party happened at Speed Rack, where Eryn Reece of Death & Co and Mayahuel took home the national title for best & fastest female bartender, all while raising money for breast cancer research. The party then moved to Evelyn, where we took turns showing off the Brugal rum glasses:
Friday, May 17th: We ladies primped for the Gala, then met liquor power couple Rachel & Kyle Ford (of Ford Mixology Lab) for dinner at the Lamb’s Club, before continuing on to the New York Public Library. Our favorite cocktail of the night was the adorable canned Negronis by Campari. Then it was off to the Clarkson in the West Village for Tanqueray’s after party, where we danced until the wee hours, some of us on the bar, and all of us to Gangnam Style.
Saturday, May 18th: While I headed up to Middle Branch for our Ode to Eau seminar (at the ungodly hour of 10:30am), Regan, Jackie & Victor got started covering the Industry Invitational and consumer facing events, including a seminar on Nordic cocktails, some afternoon burlesque at Bathtub Gin and a Brooklyn booze party.
Sunday, May 19th: Rain put a little bit of a damper on Swig ‘n Swine, but such is the draw of the Bon Vivants, not to mention LOTS of pig and punch in garbage cans, that there was a good turnout anyway. (See photos here.) Then it was time to dress up again to attend Campari’s invite-only Bartender Bash, held at Gallow Green. This was a serious highlight of the weekend, with awesome cocktails by all-star NYC bartenders (including Theo Lieberman & Lauren Schell of Milk & Honey, Leo Robitschek from the NoMad & Jeff Bell from PDT) complete with an Italian story of unrequited love.
Monday, May 20th: Brooklyn Day at the Invitational! Jack From Brooklyn sponsored the bar, Red Hook Lobster did lobster rolls, and we were pretty much in heaven. Victor learned about Pisco Sours from Dale DeGroff, Regan hit up all things sherry at The Beagle and we all got a little tipsy in the High West Suite at the Andaz.
Tuesday, May 21st: Had breakfast at 3pm, headed to the Indie Spirits Expo to taste LOTS of brands, was exhausted. Jackie went to a Filipino feast and apparently there was a pool party in the Bacardi Suite. Victor checked out “Weird Science: Master Mixology” at Pouring Ribbons.
And now, we get to write about it! Read our current Cocktail Classic coverage here, and stay tuned for more posts & updates coming soon. And mark your calendars for next year’s Classic, happening May 9-13, 2014.
