A newly re-imagined classic, the Monkey Bar has been restored to its prior glory with a cocktail menu – courtesy of Julie Reiner of Brooklyn’s Clover Club and Lani Kai – to match. There are a number of old favorites, as well as some new creations, which you can enjoy in the formal dining room on one of their red leather banquettes, that, as they put it harkens back to “a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.” And if you happened to leave your tie or gloves at home you can also pop in to the bar out front for the same cocktails and snacks.
Who: Old school work colleagues, business clients, your boss, parents (especially if they’re paying)
What: Monkey Gland. What else? Made with gin, pomegranate molasses, orange juice, absinthe, and orange bitters, it’s not for the faint of heart.
When: Weeknights for happy hour and/or dinner
Pro tip: The côte du boeuf for the table with puréed potatoes and spinach is an excellent choice.
