Sneak Peek: Sweetwater Social
By Marysa Mitch
In this city, basement bars tend to be speakeasies – dark, mysterious, sometimes hard to get into, and usually with killer cocktails. While we love a subterranean mystery, New York City is a big place and there’s room in this town for a different type of basement bar. Enter, Sweetwater Social. Opening tonight, it’s a bar that serves up high-end cocktails with a NYC theme and honest to goodness fun.

Who’s behind it? Bar vets Tim Cooper (Goldbar) and Justin Noel (1534) teamed up to created a stellar NYC themed cocktail program for Sweetwater Social. The menu is on a subway map and each stop offers a cocktail for that neighborhood. Creative and delicious – we wouldn’t expect anything less.
What should you drink? We’re fans of the Big Trouble, Little China (toasted sesame infused bourbon, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, cucumber, salt tincture, club soda ), WU-Tea-Ki (black tea infused rum, lemon demerara, Hella citrus bitters, Angostura bitters, Greek coffee cup, crushed ice, mint sprig) and the Mama Picante (reposado tequila, chili liqueur, orange juice, lime juice, agave nectar). But really, you should try them all!
Why should you go? For fun! Not only are the drinks creative, but the space and atmosphere is as well. Think a classy rec room. The 20 foot communal in the middle of the bar fits in perfectly in the beautiful, yet relaxed, space. You’ll have a chance to drink, socialize and hopefully make new friends while playing foosball, shuffleboard and board games.
How do you get there? When talking about a bar with a subway map as its cocktail menu, we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you what subway line to take. Sweetwater Social is located just below Bleecker Kitchen & Co. on the corner of Broadway and Bleecker. You can take the 6 to the Bleecker Street or the B/D/F/M to Broadway-Lafayette.
Sweetwater Social. 643 Broadway. (212) 253-7467. 5pm-2am Wednesday-Saturday.
