The Shanty

The Shanty is the bar attached to the New York Distilling Company, which makes two kinds of gin and has a rye in the works, and is owned by legendary bartender Allen Katz and Tom Potter, formerly of Brooklyn Brewery.  The bar’s large picture windows overlook the distilling room, and they offer tours twice nightly Monday-Thursdays between 5 and 7, and on weekends — when there’s also live music after 4pm.  The space is large and airy, housed as it is in part of the distillery warehouse.  Cozy up to bar, or grab one of the wooden tables with a group and stay awhile.  They serve up plenty of gin, but don’t fear, the bar is stocked with just about anything else you could want, too.

Who: Fun group of friends – it’s a good spot for larger parties

What: Since you’re here, we’d go for one of the signature tipples featuring their own hooch.

When: If you’re in the hood, it’s a great spot any day of the week, but for the Manhattanites it is a bit of trek so better to go on a weekend when you can be properly appreciative.  They’re open all afternoon Saturdays and Sundays, so stop by after a trip to MacCarren Pool

Pro tip: get the pickles and cheddar cheese with crostini for snacks
